How to Be Productive and Successful While Working from Home

Even though I currently have two full time jobs and my own home business, I worked exclusively at home for four years and loved it.  During that time, I made many mistakes and definitely learned from them enough to know what works and what doesn't work.  When you start working from home, it's a lot of trial and error, seeing what works for you and what you feel the most comfortable with.  I will tell you one thing, I needed a lot of advice and tips when I first started on my WAHM journey!  This is why I am compiling all of what I learned and sharing them with all of you! If you have any further tips for Working from Home, please post them in the comments below!

Get dressed every morning.

I know, I know.  The temptation to work from home in your pajamas and bunny slippers with your bed head/messy bun is so overwhelming.  I've been there, done that.  Doing this will only make you more tired, want to go back to bed and definitely won't help you get into the working mode.  You don't have to get dressed in full-on work gear, unless you have a Skype meeting, but just throw on a pair of jeans, yoga pants and maybe a t shirt or sweater.  Make yourself feel like you are going to work because this will increase your productivity on a daily basis.  If it makes you feel better, you can still wear your bunny slippers.

Minimize Distractions

Turn off the TV, stop playing Candy Crush and work.  I've been there before -- you're bored, there's downtime and you grab the remote to put the TV or a movie on.  Downtime always sucks but once you turn on the TV or grab your phone to play a game, say goodbye to your motivation and productivity.  Once you're distracted, you're distracted.  Instead of doing something completely unrelated to work during your downtime, do some research on new things that are going on in your industry, browse some new potential clients that you can reach out to, or maybe get some organization done.  Either of your work space, files, e-mail, etc...  If you really think about it, there is probably plenty that you can do during your downtime!

Wake Up Early

Sleeping late is heaven, I know the feeling.  I would love nothing more than to get up, have some coffee, get my kids to school and then go back to sleep for an hour, or two (or 5), but you can't.  I mean, you technically could but it wouldn't help your productivity! (Or your internal clock!)  When you're working from home this temptation is strong but fight it!  I know you can fight it!  Your body will normally wake up when it feels like it's well rested, so go with it.  Listen to it!  I know you might still feel tired, but you just have to get used to being awake.  Have some breakfast, grab your coffee, take a shower, read the paper and then get to work.  I can't stress enough how much going back to sleep will mess up your body and your productivity.

If you're not used to waking up early, you will have to transition into it.  Keep setting your alarm for a half hour earlier each day until you wake up at the time you want to wake up at.  It's hard to get your body used to it, I know, but do it for a month and it will become a habit!  (I find that rings true!)

When I solely worked from home I would follow a normal schedule as I would have if I worked outside the home.  I would wake up early, I would still shower and I would get to work.  You have to get in the mindset of thinking of working from home just like working at a job.  :)

Prioritize & Set Timers

Take a few minutes every morning to sit down and create your To-Do list for the day.  This method may not work for everyone, but I am a very visual person so seeing what I have to do and crossing out things that I've already done is very motivating and helpful to me.

I place my To-Do list in a place that I can see it every time I look at it.  Put it on a main section of your desk, tape it on your wall in front of you, put it on your bulletin board, use a sticky note and stick it on your monitor.  Justdo not put it in a drawer, in your purse or somewhere that's hidden.  You know the old saying, Out of sight, out of mind.

Now, once you've written that list, go back through it and prioritize it.  Put a 1 in front of the most important task that you need to get done, a 2 next to the second most important thing and so on.  (You get my drift!)  Also note next to the task how long you are going to give yourself to get that particular task done.  I use an app called 30/30 that times your To-Do list.  All you have to do is enter the name of the task, how long you want to spend on it, and the app will let you know when that time is up.  Setting timers helps you from spending to much time on one project.  If you're anything like me, without a timer you will end up getting carried away and lose track of time on just one task.

Clutter versus a Clean Workspace

I'm definitely not a compulsive neat freak but I'm also not a messy pig either!  Most of the time I'm somewhere in between both (just don't ask my mother because she would tell you that I'm the latter!).  When it comes to my workspace, however, I can most definitely be a compulsive neat freak.  This is mainly because I feel more productive when my home office is actually clean and organized.  When it's a mess of papers, toys, clothes, etc...  I just feel overwhelmed and find myself concentrating on the mess more than on my work.  Invest in a receipt scanner and don't let them pile up on your desk!  Scan what you feel you need to scan and if you need physical copies, store them in a photo box or envelope somewhere on a shelf.  Scan as many physical papers as you can and store them in the cloud (drop box, google docs, google drive, box, etc...) so you can access them at any time, they will be searchable and accessible from anywhere.

Make sure that your desk only has things pertaining to your business on it.  Sure you can have some pictures of your kids or some personal objects, but don't clutter it too much or place distracting objects on your desk.  You need to stay focus to be successful in working from home.

Think of Working from Home Like a Regular Job

Designate certain work hours for yourself whether or not you're working full or part time from home.  Write down a schedule for yourself and stick to it.  (Of course, if an emergency comes up you can stray away from those hours.)  The important thing is to not schedule appointments during work hours (if you can help it) and don't make spontaneous plans for lunch, the mall or grocery shopping while you're in the middle of your designated work hours.  Would you do that at an actual brick and mortar job?  Probably not!  Try to plan any appointments or activities for outside of your hours, if at all possible!

The reason I say this isn't just for yourself and your motivation but also for your clients.  I let my clients know, up front, what my availability is before I start working with them.  I let them know my office hours and what times they can reach me by phone, e-mail or instant messenger and I'm there for them during those hours.  If you make plans and decide to disconnect and your client can't get in touch with you when they need you, that's a problem.  You could possibly lose that client and get a bad referral.  Now, I know things come up that you have to attend to, so if this happens it's important to record a message on your voicemail, e-mail your clients or turn on an auto e-mail message so your clients know that you had an emergency and aren't ignoring them.  You want your clients to feel like they are the most important client that you have.

Designate yourself a certain lunch hour as well.  Give yourself an hour and stick to that lunch hour!  This will help you from forgetting to eat and getting too hungry and binging and this will also keep you from eating too much throughout the day.

Take Breaks

Do I sound contradictory?  Maybe I do, but even at a regular full time job you're entitled to breaks!  If you work a normal 8 or 9 hour work day (at a regular job) you're usually entitled to two fifteen minute breaks and an hour lunch.  Get up and take a short walk, go stretch your legs, go grab a quick coffee at Starbucks or a snack, just take a short break.  Yes, you do need to stay in the work mode but you also don't want to overwhelm yourself and your brain either.

Set Realistic Goals

I'm a dreamer and I do admit that openly.  I am one of those people who set unrealistic goals for myself just so I work harder to achieve them and that's good on one hand.  On the other hand, if your'e one of those people who will stress yourself out if you don't reach those unrealistic goals, that's bad.  You need to set goals for yourself that are attainable in the amount of time that you have or want to have.  Tackle one to two big projects per day and supplement your day with some smaller projects that aren't so stressful.  If you try to take on too much at once, you will overwhelm yourself.

Don't be afraid to say no.  If you already have 2-4 large clients and you're already getting overwhelmed, it's okay to say no to a new large client.  Don't feel like you'll lose business if you don't take the client on because you won't!  Your current clients will still spread the word about your business, you will still get plenty of referrals, and the client that you said "no" to will respect your honesty.  That's why it's important to network and have other colleagues who you could refer the client to.  If you refer your client to another professional in your field, that professional will be forever grateful to you!  They will probably even pay it forward one day when they have a client that they can't handle.

Change the Scenery

If you have a day with no large projects, try to work from a different location.  If the weather is nice I would suggest to bring your laptop outside and work from your patio.  You could also work from Starbucks or another coffee shop to get out and be around other people.  Maybe bring your laptop into the living room where your young children are playing instead of locking yourself in your office.  Again don't do this too frequently because you don't want to let distractions keep you from working, but every once in a while changing the scenery is very healthy for you.  (As long as you're still working hard and not slacking off!)

Invest in your Office

I don't mean invest in terms of spending a boatload of money but more as in investing in your business and future.  You don't have to spend a lot of money to re-do a room.  You can get cheap book cases and filing cabinets from Walmart or Target, you can get a nice desk from Ikea or Target, etc...  It's important for you to enjoy your home office or you won't want to work.  Make it professional  but homey and comfortable, make it calming but make sure there is enough storage for your profession.  Do you need filing cabinets for important files?  Do you need a lot of book shelves for books, manuals, folders, etc..?  Do you want a couch in order to be able to move around while you work?  Think about what you want and need for your office and start planning out what would make you the most comfortable and happy.  After all, this is your workspace! I wrote an article back in 2012 about Creating an Office Space for WAHMs and this article has been viewed over 6,500 times.

Finding Peace and Having a Stress Free Holiday Season

The Holiday Season is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year filled with peace, love, joy and all of that other sentimental bullshit.  So why are we so stressed around this time of the year? If you host Christmas, it's probably all the stress of trying to make things perfect to have your family over but if you don't host Christmas, it's probably the stress of finding the money for the right presents and getting the right presents.  There are many, many reasons that people stress and don't actually sit down and enjoy the Holidays and I have some tips to try to avoid most of the stress.

>> Helpful Holiday Timeline

Take your time Decorating

After Thankgiving is over don't try to rush Christmas, retail and the media do that enough for us with their Christmas trees out in stores before Halloween is even over.  Take the time to enjoy Thanksgiving with your family and then worry about getting your Christmas decorations out.  After all, you have to finish those leftovers and recover from your turkey coma, right?

A lot of people try to get the Christmas decorations up right after the Thanksgiving guests leave, but I say to wait a few days.  Give it three or four days to plan what you want the tree to look like, how you want to arrange your outdoor decorations and to take inventory of what Christmas lights work and don't work.  You don't want to be standing outside in below zero temperatures only to find out that half your string of lights are out, do you?  Frankly, that would suck and would piss me off beyond belief.

Shop Throughout the Year

Don't wait until November to start Christmas shopping, it will only stress you out rushing around to find the right presents.  After all, they don't call it the Christmas rush for nothing, right? There are plenty of great sales and deals throughout the entire year.  Pick things up as you see them and put them away in a place that you will be able to find it come December.  There are times that I have taken advantage of the after Christmas sales on Dec 26th in order to shop for the following year.  As long as you know where you put the presents you bought in July, you're golden!

Plan Ahead

It's very important to plan ahead so you're not stuck at the last minute trying to think of ideas.  I am a big list person and I utilize my Bullet Journal, which you can read about here, in order to plan and organize different things that are going on in my life.  You can also find numerous printables on pinterest for this exact purpose that will also help you organize and plan the Holidays,

It's important to plan ahead for
  • Gifts for family members and friends.  Just jot down ideas off the top of your head that you might want to get people.  You can always finalize this later.
  • Christmas dinner or Holiday get togethers.  Once again, just jot down ideas that you might want to cook.  Search Pinterest for Holiday appetizers/main dishes/desserts, that's my favorite place to get cuisine inspiration.
  • Plan decorations for both outside and inside.  Test your lights to make sure they work because you will also write a shopping list of things you need before you decorate.  It's important to take inventory so you're not stressed or blindsided by missing items when you begin to decorate.
  • YOUR BUDGET - This might be the most important so as always, save the best for last.  Sit down with all of your bills.  Write down what you make in a month, all of your bills for that month and with the figure that is left prioritize.  What is the most important thing you will have to spend money on?  That should be the most amount of money that you allocate.  Then you can go down the list of expenses/gifts and allocate the appropriate amount of money for each.  Don't leave yourself short either, then you will just get even more stressed.

If you plan ahead and make lists, you will know exactly what you still need, what you have completed, and if you have time to add in any more tasks at that particular time.  If you don't want to write a list, download an app that can assist you.  My favorites are Any,do, Tasks and Easily,do.

Shop Deals & Save Money

If you are the most stressed about finances and presents there are ways to be smart about this.  Keep a look out for sales.  Leading up to Black Friday and even Christmas stores start to have some amazing sales, so don't just throw out those store circulars when you receive them on your doorstep.  Make sure you have your list of presents that you want for your children, friends or family and keep a look out for that item on sale.  It's also important to not purchase the item the first time it goes on sale, especially if the item is just slightly discounted.  The closer it gets to Christmas, the more sales there will be. (Just don't procrastinate!)

Black Friday is a great day to get some amazing prices on items you want, need or want to get as gifts.  You don't have to be a crazy person and go out right after Thanksgiving dinner because deals are staggered at different times throughout the night and early morning.  Just make a list of the deals you want, bundle up just in case there's a line, grab some hot chocolate to bring with you and head out to save money!  At least that's what I do...

Cyber Monday is also a great day to save money! Although, I haven't seen deals as good as Black Friday on Cyber Monday... But I digress...  Get on your bunny slippers and cozy robe, grab your morning cup of coffee and log on to shop the Cyber Monday deals.  You don't even have to get out of bed if you don't want to!

There are many other ways to find good presents.  You can shop flea markets, garage sales, Goodwill, Craigslist, online Faceboook yard sale communities, Thrift stores, etc...  You might think that these places wouldn't be good for Christmas shopping, but you can find some very unique gifts there.  You can also sometimes find brand named products still in their original packaging, it's all a game of luck, but it doesn't hurt to look!

Easy Gift Giving

Don't stress about finding the perfect gift because it probably don't exist.  I think the perfect gift could be a gift card, the recipient could then take that gift card and get exactly what they want with it and you don't have to worry about hoping they like the gift.  Another great gift could be something that you can make by yourself.  (Keep a look out for my DIY gift posts coming up in the next week!)  A gift that is handmade comes directly from the heart and is appreciated.  Trust me, I would rather handmade bath salts, lotions, candles, art; it shows that the person cared enough to take the time to create something for you.  Truly a one of a kind gift.

You could also get a unique gift basket.  These are found at Big Lots, Sams Club, Walmart, BJ's Wholesale, Costco and even some specialty stores and mall kiosks.  These gifts are basically already arranged and wrapped for you, just add a gift bag!

Santa Pictures with the Kids

Take this advice from personal experience; Don't wait too long to get your kids' pictures taken with Santa.  You will regret it when you see the lines!  Santa usually starts to come to the mall the weekend before or after Thanksgiving. (Depending on where you live.)  If you are going to go to a mall Santa, go early.  You will avoid the lines.  If you are on a budget and go see a mall Santa, ask about separate photos.  They will try to get you to purchase the package and may sometimes make it seem like the package is the only option, but it's not.  You can buy a single 5x7 and that's usually a good $10-15 less than the package.  You can always make copies for family members.

If that's still too expensive for your budget, keep a look out for free events for kids.  Toys R Us/Babies R Us usually has pictures with Santa for free or for a small donation.  Many other community places such as town centers, churches, community centers, etc... probably have free pictures with Santa during their events as well.  Just look in your local paper, Facebook or just do an online search.

Tips for Long-Distance Relatives

If you're sending Christmas presents to relatives that live in another city or state, the typical mail by date would be anywhere between December 10th and December 15th.  This will give a pretty decent margin for any error by the shipping company; who knows what could happen!?  You want your packages to get there on time, so send with plenty of time.

As for Christmas cards, I would say that the typical date to mail your Christmas cards would be December 15th.  Once again, you want to give a decent margin for postal service error or any delay in your Christmas cards getting to their recipients on time.

Use Shortcuts

If you don't have to bake a pie from scratch, don't bake a pie from scratch!  Is your party or dinner casual? Get Holiday paper plates to minimize your clean up! If you can buy store bought appetizers, go for it.  No one is going to punish you for using shortcuts to help keep your stress at bay!

Have Enough Batteries

Nothing is worse than your kids opening that battery operated toy that doesn't have any batteries included.  Nothing ruins a perfectly happy Christmas morning like not having batteries for that long-awaited toy and having to deal with all of the stores being closed and an angry, crying, tantrum-throwing child on your hands.  Lesson learned? Make sure you have enough batteries on hand!

Got picky eaters? How to get them to eat.

My 5 year old claims she likes salad and vegetables...

That usually consists of maybe snacking on 2 baby carrots and a few leaves of lettuce out of her bowl.  Sometimes with French dressing, sometimes just plain...  That is her view of a salad.  She claims to her teachers and her friends that she eats healthy -- That would be her opinion of "healthy".

Both of my kids are very picky eaters.  Their meals are very predictable.  Once they wake up my oldest usually eats toast, waffles or pancakes before she goes to school.  Usually.  There are days where she just doesn't want to eat and breakfast is a battle.  Occasionally I win the battle, but more often than not I end up just packing her more of a snack and send her off to school.  Battling with your kids is exhausting and sometimes you just have to pick your battles.

If she's going to have a snack at 10:30 AM is breakfast that important?  Well, yes, but I justify it to myself so I feel better about packing her a heftier snack. (Which most of it usually ends up coming home anyway.)

My youngest usually has a bowl of cereal, waffles or pancakes for breakfast.  She is a great breakfast eater and will eat quite a bit, but put eggs on her plate and she'll complain to high heavens about having some protein on her plate.  (They will eat bacon.  Yum, fatty, fried artery clogging bacon.)

Ten Tips for Ensuring a Healthy, Safe and Successful School Year

School is quickly creeping back up on us and whether we're first time school moms or moms that have had kids in school for a few years now, we want to make sure our kids are happy and healthy as they learn and grow throughout the year!  Here are ten tips to ensure that your kids are healthy, safe and successful.

1. A great healthy tip would be to make a healthy lunch that will also amuse them and make them want to eat it.  We know kids are never keen on eating healthy and always want the PB&J, Ham and Cheese sandwiches, Lunchables or they want to opt for the unhealthy options at school cafeterias.  We have been doing "Bento Boxes" around here occasionally for lunch to try to introduce healthy foods, and through my apprehension, the kids ate the healthy options I presented them because they were fun looking and amusing!  There are many resources on making Bento Boxes amusing and cute.  Google is a great place to learn about them!

2. To make homework fun, make a game out of it!!  This worked for me and also has been working for my 4 year old as we were doing some at home work to practice for school.  It has been proven that kids learn better when they're presented with information in an amusing way.  (Song, story, poem, etc...)  And it's true.  It worked for me when I was in school!   If it's information they have to memorize, make up a little song or fun poem that they can use to remember it!  Honestly, the kids will remember it for years to come. (I still remember some of the silly songs my mom used for me!)  If it's math problems or something of that sort, use quarters, dimes or nickles for every right answer!  Earning something will encourage them to actually do the work it takes to get it right rather than to just guess on the answer.

3. Set a schedule! Coming up with a special schedule for the day works perfectly.  It has been working for us since we are practicing for school.  This is our current schedule for the school year that we are going to go by. Starting from breakfast to time to leave for school to snack, dinner, homework, shower time, bed time, etc...  Put the schedule up in your kitchen in an obvious place.  You can use a dry erase board so you can alter the schedule as needed per day.

4. It's important to enroll students in after school activities.  It socializes younger children and teaches older children team work.  It can be sports, gynmastics/ballet, ice skating, art classes, community activities, church activities...  Whatever it is, it will be beneficial for your child in the future.  I have enrolled my kids in classes from a young age and they look forward to it each time they have to go!

5. If your child is bullied in school it is important to teach them self confidence and how not to listen to the bully.  I know if's very difficult to do for a child and even more hard for a parent to watch, but bullies will find a target and pick on any stupid little thing they can.  I was bullied as a child and my mom never taught me to stand up for myself and never taught me not to listen to them until I was much older.  BULLYING CAN IMPACT SCHOOL WORK NEGATIVELY.

6.  Make your child a balanced breakfast each day.  If they eat too little, they'll be hungry before lunch time and it can distract them for their schoolwork!   As they always say -- BREAKFAST IS BRAIN FOOD.

7. Set a strict bedtime.  You don't want your kids to go to bed too late and be exhausted during the day.  Make their bedtime something very reasonable between the both of you and make bedtime a big deal!  Watch a special show together, read a special book, make it together time so your kids will look forward to it and not dread bedtime.

8. If your kids are having a hard time learning and you know they're trying, there could be two simple problems.  First, get their eyes checked.  Not being able to see the board and accurately write down notes can be a big problem and big contributor to not doing well.  It was in my case!  I would write down what I heard the teachers saying instead of what I saw, because I couldn't see well.  Secondly, get their hearing checked.  It may be just the opposite.  They may be writing what's on the board and writing what they think they hear, but even something as simple as clogged ears can cause a problem!

9.  After school, it's important that your child doesn't just sit in front of the TV, Computer or video games.  Get them out for a few hours! Take them to the park, let them run around in the yard or with friends.  Exercise is essential for MANY reasons and most kids don't get enough exercise.  Especially after school.

10. Make sure they're safe getting to school!  If they're riding a bus, walk them to the bus stop or keep an eye on them out the window.  For smaller children, walk them onto the bus until they're seated, if you can.  If they walk to school, walk with your child! Get some exercise as well!  If they're getting picked up by a friend's parents, watch that they get in the car with the appropriate person.  Also, teach your children the basics of not talking to strangers, not getting in cars with strangers, etc...  Safety is vital~

Sunless tanner woes? You're not alone! Some tips from my mistakes.

You wouldn't know this by the color of my skin and definitely not by the way I burn to a freaking crisp in the sun, but I am 100% Italian. (HA!!)  I constantly say that I am the whitest Italian on the face of the earth and also probably the only Italian that doesn't tan.  Well, of course, I do tan after I burn to a crisp and peel like a snake shedding it's skin, but that is too much frustration and too much pain and danger to go through for a nice tan.

For a few years now, I have been trying self tanners.  I know, I know...Garfield the cat syndrome is ALWAYS what the end result was of my self tanning tries.  (I'm not kidding.  The day of my confirmation my aunt, who was my confirmation sponsor and is also my Godmother, came over with self tanner that she had put on.  It looked beautiful on her.  She wanted to self tan me and at the end result, I looked like a Garfield cling on.  We ran out that afternoon and got tan corrector and enough exfoliating stuff to exfoliate half the universe...LOL)  Very rarely did I actually look decent with the self tanner.

This summer, I was hell bent on finding something that worked and hell bent on getting a good looking tan.  After all, I have a lot of great things coming up this summer and would love not to look so pasty ghost white and would love not to look like a freaking lobster before I got tan.  So, I was off on my journey.  I tried some things that left me streaky and embarrassed to go out of the house, some things that were so-so and some things that worked great.  (And it took me since May to find this out. Ha)  I feel inclined to help out fellow bloggers and mommies who can't tan, don't want to go in the sun because of health risks and people who just want a nice glow for a special occasion.  This was all learned through my trial and error. (And some research)

Some TIPS for self tanning
  1. If your skin is very white and pasty like mine is and if you burn easily, I would suggest using a light - medium at first.  If after 2 applications that is not working for you, or if it gives you an orangy tint, I would suggest trying strictly a "Medium".  I wouldn't really venture towards the "Dark" or "Medium to dark" because that may not give you good results.  Most self tanners have a "Light/Medium" a strict "Medium" and a "Medium/Dark".
  2. EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN WELL before putting on the self tanner.  Use a cotton wash cloth.  If you use a "scrubbie", exfoliate in circular motions.  If you go up and down there is a good chance you may miss a spot to exfoliate and the tan will not look even.  I would use an exfoliater that isn't oil based.  It can make you look streaky as well since the self tanner may not stick to it evenly.  I use an exfoliater that you can get in small packages that cost $1.25.  It works pretty well.
  3. I suggest waiting at least 30 minutes after you get out of the shower to use the self tanner.  Some people say using it on moist skin works for them, but I haven't found that for myself.  If I use it when my skin is moist, I get streaks.  I would rather it be mostly dry.  BUT -- WHEN YOU GET OUT OF THE SHOWER, IMMEDIATELY USE A MOISTURIZER!  I use a Nivea Q10 Firming Moisturizer and I swear by that stuff.
  4. When you're ready to tan, take the moisturizer that you used and put it on the sides of your ankles, feet, knees and elbows.  Those are the places that the self tanner can build up and it will make them look dirty unless you use the moisturizer first.  JUST PUT IT ON THOSE PLACES
  5. Put maybe a quarter sized amount in your hand and start rubbing it on your legs at your ankles first.  Don't put it on your feet yet.  On the sides of your ankles where you just applied the moisturizer, rub it in lightly.  RUB IN CIRCULAR MOTION, NOT UP AND DOWN.  This helps you get a streak free tan and helps to cover all places.
  6. ON YOUR FEET - I haven't learned to perfect this yet.  I either won't use it on my feet unless I had to or I will take a small but and rub it in circular motions JUST ON THE TOP OF YOUR FEET.  Sometimes I will smooth the tanner from my ankles down towards my feet.  No one has a natural tan on their feet anyway.  It usually just fades from your ankles.
  7. Work up your leg as you go in circular motions.  Cover it evenly.  It doesn't matter if you rub it all the way in or just rub it lightly, as long as you feel it's covering evenly.  You don't want to be streaky or a Garfield cling on!!
  8. WASH YOUR HANDS after each leg.  Don't put the water on too high that it will splash on you, or you will get little dots on your tan.  Not attractive!! ;)  Though, wash your hands thouroughly. You don't want orange palms.
  9. Now it's time for your arms.  Start at your shoulders and work down.  AGAIN, rub in circular motions.  If you feel your elbows aren't completely moisturized, use a bit more moisturizer and put the self tanner over that.  You don't want your elbows to be darker!  Work to your wrists and stop.  When it comes to do your hands take a VERY LITTLE AMOUNT and rub it only on the tops of your hands.  I don't do my fingers unless I absolutely have to when the tan gets darker.  When you wash your hands, get a moist cotton wash cloth and wash the palms of your hands and sides of your hands. (If you did tan the tops of your hands.  If not, just wash your hands normally.  Again, put the water on low so you don't splash it.) Wash your hands before you do the other arm.
  10. When it comes to doing your back, I switch to a spray of the same brand and shade.  In my opinion, it's easier.  If you're going to do the spray for your back, stand in the shower while doing this.  It's easier to mist the spray and back into it.  Like you do when you spritz perfume and walk through it.  Do this about 2-3 times.  If you spray it directly onto your back, you may not get an even coverage. This has proven to work for me.  I don't use the lotion on my back because it's too unpredictable.  If you prefer lotion, I suggest having someone else do it for you.
  11. You can also use a larger painting sponge tip brush to do your back.  I haven't tried this so I don't know how true it is, but I've read it.  You would put the lotion on the brush and massage it in a circular motion onto your back.  I'D STICK WITH THE SPRAY.
  12. DO NOT PUT CLOTHES ON FOR THE FIRST 30 MINUTES AFTER TANNING.  If you can't walk around naked, put a bathing suit on before you start self tanning.  After the 30 minutes, put on loose fitting clothes or a robe for the remainder of the hour.  After an hour, it should be safe to dress.
  13. IF TANNING YOUR FACE, I would suggest to use a sunless tanner specially for the face.  Although, a regular self tanner would actually work, the ones designed for the face are gentler and don't clog pours.  Either way, I would suggest taking a little dab after you have exfoliated and spreading it in a circular motion.  Avoid the lip and eye area as well as the hairline.  After you have spread that, clean off your hands and from what is still on your face, spread the areas that you avoided.  (Don't get too close to the eye! It will probably cause iritation.) Some people suggest using a makeup sponge to spread, but honestly I don't find this the best method. The sponge absorbs most of it, so you probably will look uneven.
I don't tan anywhere else because #1. I don't walk around naked or wear a bikinni. Ha.  But if you're going to tan your torso, do the same thing as I suggested.  Circular motions.

These tips should leave you with an even tan.  I do it every day until I get the desired depth.  Do it, as I said, 30 minute after a shower when you have exfoliated well.  You don't have to exfoliate AS much after you do the tan once as you did when you were completely white.  Just lightly exfoliate to make sure the tan stays even.  After you reach the desired depth, it's best to reapply the self tanner every 3-4 days.

TOMORROW I will post the best self tanners that I have tried that actually worked without streaking and without an orange tint.  I've worked pretty hard to compile this list and I think I may have tried everything that's out on the market. (Well, with drug store brands.  I wish I had the money to try department store brands! I'm sure those work miracles.)

5 Must Have Fashionable Pieces for a Weekend Trip!!

Summer is coming and weekend trips are probably being planned!  I know for us, we love to take family trips on the weekends for many reasons.  Usually, because they're more cost efficient than actual week long trips!  The kids love them.  Even so, we want to be comfortable and fashionable.  We want to be able to look good on our weekend trips; be it with our friends or with our families.

1. The first piece I'd definitely suggest you need is a nice pair of flip flops.  You can get flip flops pretty cheap from Old Navy, Walmart, Target, Payless, etc...  Flip flops are a MUST HAVE for those warm days when sneakers would just be too stuffy. (And I think this would count as every day in the summer!!)  I'd suggest to bring a pair of flip flops that are a neutral color or a color/pattern that will match almost everything you bring with you on the trip.  You definitely want to pack light for just a weekend, so bringing multiple pairs of shoes would definitely weigh down your luggage!

2. A denim skirt/skort.  I suggest this instead of shorts because of the simple fact that sometimes shorts just aren't comfortable in the summer.  Especially in the peak of summer when you're on a trip, in the sun, in the humidity... A skirt is more airy and definitely fashionable.  If you prefer the shorts but a more fashion savvy look; go with a skort.  You get the look of a skirt, but comfort of shorts.

3.  Breezy and airy light skirt.  I suggest you also have one of these in your bag.  Get a light cotton skirt. I suggest something from Old Navy because their skirts are beautiful, light, fashionable and very well priced.  This can be paired with almost anything!

4.  Tank Tops/Camis are a MUST HAVE!  Something that will match both your skirts and your flip flops.  They're light, airy, comfortable and they breathe very well.  I love to wear these in the hot weather because I don't end up completely sweating.

5. A shrug or light sweater -  If you're going out for dinner, sometimes it's a little cooler at night.  I suggest you bring a shrug or light 3\4 inch sweater so you can just cover up a little at night.  I got a great priced light shrug from Dots that cost me $4.  Definitely cost efficient, comfortable and won't weigh you down when it's still a little humid.

10 Ways to be Fashionable on a Budget!

It's so important for mom's to do something special for themselves.  To me and some other mom's I know, making yourself look good no matter what is a very important thing.  It makes me feel womanly, cute and makes me feel like I fit in with my other friends.  For those of you who think it's absolutely impossible to be fashionable and be on a mom's budget, that's the farthest thing from the truth!  How do I know?  Because I do it all the time!

There are great ways to find great deals on fashionable clothes...and by great deals, I mean practically a steal!

1.  GARAGE/YARD SALES!!  Yes, this may sound a little off for some people, but I have been hardcore into garage/yard sales for 5 years.  Throughout those 5 years, I have found some great deals on amazing clothes.  Yes, BRAND NAME clothes.  I've found great deals on clothes here from anywhere from $0.50 to $3.  That is way below retail.  You really have to look around, dig, have patience and know how to bargain.  My mom and I write a list of 30 garage sales in our area that have descriptions that fit what we're looking for.  A lot of garage sales will note they have clothing or brand name clothing.  Definitely go to those...  To give you an idea of how good you can get deals;  I got a $90 pair of coach shoes in the box never used for $10.   I also got a $30 Gap sweatshirt for $1.

2. Discount clothing stores -  Such as TJ Maxx, Dots, D&D, Marshalls, AJ Wright, Pay/Half and so on...  You can get some great fashionable clothes at amazing prices.  Even shoes and purses.  Pay/Half, AJ Wright, TJ Maxx and Marshalls buy overstocked brand name clothing at wholesale prices so they can sell them for way below retail.  Those big name retailers just have too much of the stock and are itching to get them out of their warehouse...  So these stores offer them at great prices.  Dots & D&D's have their own clothing that are really knock offs of the brand name clothing.  So you can get fashionable clothing that looks like the real thing for very cheap.  For Dots, you can find various coupons every month for extra savings.

3. Trading with friends - I have done this many a time.  Usually people have clothing they just don't want anymore and want to donate... I have gotten a bunch of friends together that have bags of clothes they don't want or can't use anymore.  Have a little party/get together at your house and have them bring the clothes.  At that party,  just swap the clothes that all of you don't want.  You get something you do want, get rid of things you don't need, and have new outfits for absolutely nothing!  It's a great way to clean through and restock your closet.  I have done this so many times and it always worked out.  Friends also love to do this...it brings back youth and "borrowing" clothes. ;)

4.  Outlet Stores -  Another great way to get some great things for cheap.  Most states have outlet malls where the retail stores send their overstock to get it sold at great prices.  You can also find some coupons TO the outlet stores.

5.  Craigslist - I've sold clothes on Craigslist and also have bought clothes on Craigslist... The best part about this, is a lot of people sell a whole box of clothes for a certain price.  I got a box of Old Navy, Gap, Express, Forever 21 and so on clothes for just $30.  That box was worth over $100.  The clothes in there were so fashionable and were very well priced to sell.  Just make sure you specify your size, if inquiring about a box of clothes and make sure you read the listing to see if there is a size specified.  There are honestly listings for probably EVERY size...  Whatever doesn't fit, resell or give away.

6. Sign Up for mailing lists/coupons - COUPONS.... I CAN NEVER STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!  They're so important and so valuable.  Treat your coupons like you would cash... Honestly.  I can't stress this enough! Ha!  Sign up for as many mailing lists as you can for your favorite stores.  NY&Co, Express, Old Navy, Target, Kohls..They frequently mail coupons and they're valuable too.  Most recently, NY&Co had a coupon that was $30 off a $75 purchase.  That's saving a lot...  I know Old Navy has had $50 off of $50 and a lot of others.  Coupons help out a lot...  Match them with clearance items.  Even if you're shopping for next season.

7.  Basics with Accessories - If you have a nice pair of jeans, you can dress them up with heels or down with sneakers.  What you absolutely NEED are:

  • A great pair of jeans.  Preferably one pair of flare and one pair of straight leg
  • Two pairs of leggings.  One ankle long pair and one calf long pair
  • A nice skirt
  • Black pants
  • Shirts in solid colors
If you have those, you can dress them up or down, making new looks every time.  Use the solid color shirts and wear new accessories every time.  You can buy accessories for very cheap from different stores (i.e. Claires, Icing, local stores...)  I have done this many times and it works.  Saves a lot of money as well!

8. Thrift Stores -  The same concept as Craigslist and Garage sales.  Thrift stores are priced great as well and you can find some great pieces for a lot less than retail!  I really believe in buying clothes second hand.  Just make sure they are well kept before you purchase them.

9. Buy on off season - If you're looking for summer clothes, buy them towards the fall for next year.  Same with all of the other seasons.  Actually, stores usually put their clothes on clearange 4-5 weeks after they come out.  I have gotten some great fashionable summer clothes at Old Navy ALREADY... In May.  That's because they put them out at the beginning of April or even end of March and already are discounting their pieces 40-50%.  SHOP CLEARANCE SECTIONS..

10. Shop Online -  Sometimes shopping online can save you a lot because of coupon codes.  There are many great sites to obtain coupon codes, so really google around before you buy anything.  Hit the online stores that have free shipping after a certain amount.  ALSO - sign up for the sites that give you cash back or points towards gift cards.  Swag Bucks, My Points and so on are VERY good ways to turn what you spend into rewards...  You can use them in conjunction with coupon codes too.  Saving even more!!

10 Tips on Managing and Organizing Your Life & Time

Does the above image look all too familiar to you?  Yeah, it does to me too!

Being a mom is time consuming enough, how do we manage our time?  Between kids, housework, family, work, cooking and just life -- There aren't enough hours in the day!  I find that being a single mom, especially, is very difficult.  It's challenging.  I have had to come up with some easy ways to keep myself organized. Unfortunately, it wasn't too easy at first, but it definitely helps me stay organized.

1. Coupon Organizer/Binder: I just take an ordinary binder from the dollar store & seperate it into different sections. (Dairy, Produce, Baby, Pet, Frozen Foods, etc...) Use trading card sheets and label them by manufacturer or sub category you wish to use.  Put each coupon into the appropriate sleeve.  Honestly, this saves you so much time at the grocery store.  Your coupons are right at hand when you need them.  I also use envelopes with holes punched into them so they fit in the binder to organize Target coupons, Walgreens, Catelinas, CVS, etc...  It definitely keeps things separate so you know where they are when you need them.  I also have an extra sleeve in the front for store/discount cards.  Easier than digging in your purse/wallet!  Folders can hold coupon policies or current week flyers.  Make sure to keep binder paper in there for lists!  This is honestly one of the BEST things I have ever done.  It cut the time of my shopping trip in more than half!!

2. Checklists: This is something that is also very important in my life. I get overwhelmed VERY easily when I'm doing something, so having things organized in front of me is a major plus. There are so many tasks that need to be done and even tasks within those tasks.  (i.e. Cleaning.  I make a checklist of things that need to be done when I am cleaning, and I make sure to list them in order of importance.)  I also make checklists for packing for trips, packing a diaper bag, shopping at grocery store, running errands, putting together a party, safety, etc... Checklists can be used for many things and they're very useful -- they reduce stress!

3. Create a cleaning schedule: I have tried cleaning the entire house in one day - IMPOSSIBLE!  I decided to create a cleaning schedule so I don't overwhelm myself.  Just take it day by day and write the schedule down.  Small cleaning can be done in between, but major things such as cleaning the bathroom, kitchen, mopping the floor/vacuuming or sorting out toys.  Definitely schedule on the cleaning schedule.  It really does help with reducing that terribly overwhelming feeling when you are starting cleaning.

4. Family Binder: What would go in a family binder? Phone numbers for friends/family, school contacts - It is so much easier to have these numbers at hand than sorting through papers or a phone book when you need to call someone right at that moment.  A calendar - Keep that months calendar in there so you can flip to that at the beginning of the day to ensure an easier way to see all you have to do.   Checklists - Definitely keep these in there as well.  Bills to pay, tracking your budget, invites to parties, school notices, AND YOUR WEEKLY MENU/RECIPES!

5. Weekly Menu: Very important as well.  PLAN AHEAD!!  Don't stress the day of what you're going to eat for dinner, lunch, breakfast, etc...  That wastes time.  Make a menu plan at the beginning of the week.  Do the shopping that day or the day after making sure that you get the right amount of food for what you are going to cook.  Also pull out the recipes for what you plan to make so you have those right at hand.  (Stick them all in the Family Binder. ;) )

6. Everyone Must Chip In:  We know back in the day the woman did the housework and cooking and the man worked to bring in the dough.  Not so much these days!  Everyone really should chip in with the chores.  Husband, kids and even the dog if he was talented enough. ;) Ha!  It's very important that you can split the chores between all of you - Washing dishes, taking out trash, etc...  It relieves the stress on you yourself and also teaches your kids (oh and your husband!) responsibility.  There are ways to make things more interesting for your kids as well!

7. Cook Extra: If you have time at the beginning of the week, try to make some extra meals and freeze them.  I sometimes do this when my kids are napping or playing quietly.  When it's time for the meals, just take them out of the fridge, finish the preparation and put them on the table!  I do this when I have the time because it's just a lot more helpful.  Especially when you're doing activities with your kids and driving here and there.  Life gets complicated.

8. Keep Important Things At Hand:  Keep a little wall organizer near the door with important things such as keys, important notes, mail that has to be sent, cameras, extra socks, keep shoes near the door in a basket or on an organizer, back packs (after homework is done of course!) or your purse.  Just so when you're walking out the door, you know where those things are rather than spending extra time looking for them.

9. Donate / Throw Out / Store: The last tip is really to just stay organized by throwing things out.  If you find a toy that has missing pieces, don't just keep it around hoping you'll find the other piece.  Chances are you won't find that piece and that toy will sit there useless until you remember you still haven't found the pieces.  I really hate to throw things out, but I used to keep everything until I realized it wasn't possible to do that anymore.  When it comes to clothes, if your child outgrows something (or if you do!) either put it in a storage box/space bag for your next child or donate/sell it.  Don't keep it in your closet because it will make it more challenging to actually find the size you really need when you need to find something to wear.

10. TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF: This is VITAL in my staying organized.  I need to take at least one day for myself per week or every other week to regroup.  Go out with some friends, go see a movie, send the kids to grandmas and just spend some time with your husband...  It's vital to your sanity as well.  :)  When your kids are around, you do everything for them.  You have very little time for yourself.
