First day of Kindergarten. :(

Alayna started her first day of Kindergarten yesterday and mommy cried.  Alayna didn't cry but mommy did! I can't believe my little baby is getting older!  It's so hard to think about her already going to school for a full day, but I am grateful!  I'll have some time to myself since Olivia is so easy on her own.  She amuses herself well! :)

There was just one problem when I dropped her off yesterday -- She's the only one from her AM pre-school class in her Kindergarten class.  We were all very upset, but Alayna took it like a trooper.  When she got home yesterday she expressed how upset she was.  It seemed like they kept all the AM class together except for my Alayna.  Her teacher also seemed like she was a tough one and not too compassionate towards the children.  To tell you how un-compassionate the teacher is, there was a little girl in her class who had a broken arm.  The teacher said to this 5/6 year old, "What did you do, get hit by a truck?"  I mean...who says that to a 5/6 year old!

Monday Mingle (text version) and Alayna's first poster/presentation!

Alayna Danielle, my 5 year old little diva, has her first presentation today to accompany her first poster that she has ever had to make for school.   Their class does a "Star Student" week, where each week they pick two students to be the star students.  They then have to make a poster about themselves and bring 5 things (one each day of the week) for Show and Tell.  She brought her Lalaloopsy doll today and the poster that she and I made together.  (Thank God for my Cricut or I wouldn't have been able to make her name look so presentable!)

Ten Tips for Ensuring a Healthy, Safe and Successful School Year

School is quickly creeping back up on us and whether we're first time school moms or moms that have had kids in school for a few years now, we want to make sure our kids are happy and healthy as they learn and grow throughout the year!  Here are ten tips to ensure that your kids are healthy, safe and successful.

1. A great healthy tip would be to make a healthy lunch that will also amuse them and make them want to eat it.  We know kids are never keen on eating healthy and always want the PB&J, Ham and Cheese sandwiches, Lunchables or they want to opt for the unhealthy options at school cafeterias.  We have been doing "Bento Boxes" around here occasionally for lunch to try to introduce healthy foods, and through my apprehension, the kids ate the healthy options I presented them because they were fun looking and amusing!  There are many resources on making Bento Boxes amusing and cute.  Google is a great place to learn about them!

2. To make homework fun, make a game out of it!!  This worked for me and also has been working for my 4 year old as we were doing some at home work to practice for school.  It has been proven that kids learn better when they're presented with information in an amusing way.  (Song, story, poem, etc...)  And it's true.  It worked for me when I was in school!   If it's information they have to memorize, make up a little song or fun poem that they can use to remember it!  Honestly, the kids will remember it for years to come. (I still remember some of the silly songs my mom used for me!)  If it's math problems or something of that sort, use quarters, dimes or nickles for every right answer!  Earning something will encourage them to actually do the work it takes to get it right rather than to just guess on the answer.

3. Set a schedule! Coming up with a special schedule for the day works perfectly.  It has been working for us since we are practicing for school.  This is our current schedule for the school year that we are going to go by. Starting from breakfast to time to leave for school to snack, dinner, homework, shower time, bed time, etc...  Put the schedule up in your kitchen in an obvious place.  You can use a dry erase board so you can alter the schedule as needed per day.

4. It's important to enroll students in after school activities.  It socializes younger children and teaches older children team work.  It can be sports, gynmastics/ballet, ice skating, art classes, community activities, church activities...  Whatever it is, it will be beneficial for your child in the future.  I have enrolled my kids in classes from a young age and they look forward to it each time they have to go!

5. If your child is bullied in school it is important to teach them self confidence and how not to listen to the bully.  I know if's very difficult to do for a child and even more hard for a parent to watch, but bullies will find a target and pick on any stupid little thing they can.  I was bullied as a child and my mom never taught me to stand up for myself and never taught me not to listen to them until I was much older.  BULLYING CAN IMPACT SCHOOL WORK NEGATIVELY.

6.  Make your child a balanced breakfast each day.  If they eat too little, they'll be hungry before lunch time and it can distract them for their schoolwork!   As they always say -- BREAKFAST IS BRAIN FOOD.

7. Set a strict bedtime.  You don't want your kids to go to bed too late and be exhausted during the day.  Make their bedtime something very reasonable between the both of you and make bedtime a big deal!  Watch a special show together, read a special book, make it together time so your kids will look forward to it and not dread bedtime.

8. If your kids are having a hard time learning and you know they're trying, there could be two simple problems.  First, get their eyes checked.  Not being able to see the board and accurately write down notes can be a big problem and big contributor to not doing well.  It was in my case!  I would write down what I heard the teachers saying instead of what I saw, because I couldn't see well.  Secondly, get their hearing checked.  It may be just the opposite.  They may be writing what's on the board and writing what they think they hear, but even something as simple as clogged ears can cause a problem!

9.  After school, it's important that your child doesn't just sit in front of the TV, Computer or video games.  Get them out for a few hours! Take them to the park, let them run around in the yard or with friends.  Exercise is essential for MANY reasons and most kids don't get enough exercise.  Especially after school.

10. Make sure they're safe getting to school!  If they're riding a bus, walk them to the bus stop or keep an eye on them out the window.  For smaller children, walk them onto the bus until they're seated, if you can.  If they walk to school, walk with your child! Get some exercise as well!  If they're getting picked up by a friend's parents, watch that they get in the car with the appropriate person.  Also, teach your children the basics of not talking to strangers, not getting in cars with strangers, etc...  Safety is vital~

We're all registered!

Well, my daughter is.  For pre school in the fall.  If you want my opinion, she is so much more advanced than the kids I saw there today.  (Not to mention, her being tall is making her stand out like a sore thumb!)  But since she was born a few days after the NJ State cut off date, she has to be in pre school right now and not last year.  She is excited and I'm excited for her because I know how happy finally going to a real school is making her.

I do have to say -- our school district really is disorganized when it comes to this mess.  I showed up two hours earlier than when I was supposed to be there and there was already 14 people in front of me.  Thank God I got there early, because there were so many more people there after me.  It seemed more like a cattle call than registration.  It was mostly first come first serve due to overcrowding, so if I went later, I would have risked my daughter not getting into a pre school at all.

Monday Mingle just didn't happen for me today! (Unless I can quickly do it tonight.)  I was so busy this weekend and today.  I have been really good with blogging until life got a hold of me!  Sorry this is so short!  Just wanted to let you know I am still around. Haha. Tomorrow will be a better blog, I promise!!

My daughter was born on October 5th, 2005.  She is a very smart little girl who can already count to 50, can write and spell her name and shocks me with all of the useless facts that she knows and retains. She can even count to 10 in Spanish and retains the spanish and sign language words that the Goodnight Show on Sprout teaches her.

At age 3, she was so bored at home and asked me to go to school, that I enrolled her in Gymboree Pre-School skills where she did learn a lot.  However, she got bored halfway through the year and even her teacher told me that she had to be in a more challenging school.

Unfortunately for us, the New Jersey State cut off date for Pre-School is October 1st; she misses it by just 4 days.  After getting her tested, finding out that she is on a 1st grader's level and fighting with/sending the results of those tests to the local board of education, we found out that there was absolutely no way she could have gotten into pre-school for the 2009/2010 school year.

We tried to send her to Tutor Time, which is a preschool-esque class, but it ended up that wasn't challenging enough for her.  Her teacher there told me that she was too advanced and was getting bored very easily with the work they were doing.  Instead of wasting the $400 a month, I ended up taking her out of there and keeping her home for the rest of this year.  We got workbooks and did work by ourselves, I taught her a little more so she wouldn't be totally bored and she was learning more, but wanted to go to school so badly with her friends.

Now, we hear that New Jersey govorner, Chris Christie, is looking to cut state wide pre-school programs because he considers them "babysitting".  His exact quote was; “the government should babysit children?  It’s simply wrong.” He doesn't see the programs essential to children as a precursor to kindergarten.  Gorvorner Christie sees them as unnecessary and a waste of money, even though New Jersey public schools are among the best in the nation.  I talk to mom's around town who have kids in pre-school and they tell me that the pre-school program is amazing.  The kids actually learn a lot more than I did when I was in pre-school... Early childhood education has come a LONG way since the 80's.

Govorner Christie is also wanting to make full day kindergarten classes into half day to cut government spending.  That is completely wrong to our children.  Just imagine the less they'll learn with just half day classes?  What will they accomplish in one year?  It will be so much less than what other children not in New Jersey would learn.  What good is that?!

This is very frustrating to me since the fact that my daughter will be almost 6 years old before she even goes into school.  It's a disgrace since she is so smart and wants to go to school so badly so she can learn more than she already knows.  Not only my daughter, but if this goes through, it will effect about 9,500 children all throughout the many districts effected.  It's just plain wrong.
