Why I Loved Being a Work at Home Mom

Image borrowed from It's a WAHM Thing

While browsing through my e-mail one day I saw this post and it really made me miss being a work at home mom.  In the post the blogger states the frustrations but also the many (more) advantages of being a work at home mom and I completely agree with both sides.

I was a work at home mom from the moment my daughter was a year old until two years ago and I used to absolutely love to be home with my little girl.  Before choosing to work from home I was hesitant to make that huge change.  The change from going to work every day and being social with my fellow employees to working from home and having no interaction with anyone else I work with or the outside world. (not to be dramatic!)  Though, the more I thought about being able to be home with my daughter and being able to watch her grow up, the more I wanted to make the switch.  I was glad I did.

The main advantages, for me, were as follows:

#1.  Being able to see her grow up.  That was a huge thing for me.  As a first time mom, at that point, I did not want to miss a second of her being a baby.  I had already regretted that I went back to work (outside the home) right after my 6 weeks was up until the time she was a year old.  I know, I was a single mom and that's all I could do at that point, but I feel like I missed a lot of her actual infancy.  I didn't want to miss another minute of any firsts for her.  I'm big on milestones and recorded absolutely everything that she did, so I was very happy that I would get to continue that.

#2.  Being able to make my own hours was also a huge advantage for me.  For the first few years I worked with two companies that contracted at home workers, but I was still able to choose my own schedule.  I was able to work around my daughter's schedule, take breaks when she needed something and was still able to take care of the house while I had some downtime.  I loved being able to work when I was able to.

#3.  The challenge to stay motivated was also a huge deal for me.  I love to challenge myself and this was a big one.  The transition from working outside of the home to working at home was definitely more difficult in that aspect.  Why?  When you work outside of the home you have a boss breathing down your neck every minute of the day.  You have a boss to tell you what to do and when to do it...when you work at home it's just you, in your home, with PLENTY of distractions.  So challenging myself not to turn on the TV, pick up a book, chat on my phone or letting the dishes in the sink nag me!  It was hard to stay motivated in the beginning, but once I got a momentum going it was much easier.  I loved it.

Those are the top three reasons I absolutely loved being a work at home mom.  Why did I feel I had to write this post?  Well, today I was offered a promotion at my seasonal job to become Office Manager and I accepted the job.  I'm not feeling sad about it at all, in fact I'm extremely excited to have gotten this promotion.  It's a huge honor and one that I will take on head first and combat my way to success.  However, I wanted to look back and let others know that working from home is completely do-able and a great opportunity if you have young children or are a single mother.  I may be working outside of the home now, but I wouldn't trade my work at home days for anything in the world.

Mommy Gone Crazy -- Where's my sanity?

This is my day after I leave work today.

I usually work until 4pm with my day job and get home by 4:30pm, I work about 30-35 minutes away from where I live.  Today I have absolutely no free time at all today, not even after 11:30 when I finally get home from finishing shopping.

A few weeks ago I found out that I have a leak in my air valve on my front passenger side tire and it keeps losing air. I finally just put electrical tape around the air valve, it did help, but when it rains it looses it's sticky and it starts losing air more rapidly again.  The only time I can get to the dealer is on Saturdays and they have no time until after Christmas to see me.  Finally, I called Firestone and asked if they can do anything for me.  Thankfully they said that they can replace the air valve for me instead of the whole sensor -- but my air pressure light will still be on my dashboard.  Who cares about the damn light, I just don't want to have to constantly fill my damn tire with air every other day!  I set up an appointment at 4:40pm for that, directly after I get home.

Yesterday my oldest, Alayna, woke up with a fever, horrible cough and very scratchy throat.  I figured it was just a 24 hour thing and gave her Tylenol while she stayed home from school.  Optimism is definitely my thing because I thought she would be better this morning.  WRONG!  She still had a fever this morning and felt even worse so I kept her home again and made a doctors appointment for her at 5:15 today.  Now I have to run home from Firestone after that is done, get Alayna, my mom and Olivia and go to the doctors office.  Why do I have to bring them all with me?  I have a job interview at 5:45 with H&R Block.

For the past 7 years I have worked seasonally at H&R Block as a receptionist and this year will probably be no different.  Yes, I do have a day job but unfortunately I need a second job to help catch up on the bills we were late on when I was unemployed.  I figure that this seasonal job (jan-april) will help with paying those bills down so we are current on all of our bills.  Right now we don't have too much leeway with money after paying bills and I wish we had some extra. So basically I have to leave my mom and the girls at the pediatrician's office while I run to the interview and then pick them back up.

After that (bored yet?) I have to finish Christmas shopping, I'm going out with one of my friends for a few hours of sanity tonight and then come home and make:
  • 18 Christmas bags for Alayna's class
  • 22 Christmas bags for Olivia's class
  • 22 Birthday/Christmas cupcakes for Olivia's birthday tomorrow. (Class)
  • 15 Birthday/Minnie Mouse cupcakes for Olivia's birthday party tomorrow night
  • 15 Goody bags for Olivia's birthday party tomorrow night
I also have to prep her Birthday activity for her party since we are having a bunch of 4-5 year old making foam gingerbread houses at the party.  I'm going to be up until probably 3 am doing all of this and I don't know how I'm going to do it.  Nobody better bother me tomorrow, I'm sleeping for as long as I can before I have to do a million more things....

NEVER go to the mall with kids.

Tuesday I made the very hard and stressful decision to leave Old Navy.  I enjoyed the job but the 45 minute commute to and from work everyday was very stressful on me and tough on my wallet for gas money.  As much as I loved everyone there and enjoyed the job (and the discount!) I told them that we had to part ways as I didn't want to be unfair to them when I couldn't give my all to the job. As I was in the car on the way home from telling them I had to leave (and I was in tears) I got a phone call from Coach.  I had applied with them a few weeks prior and had gone on an interview about a week and a half before...  They were offering me a job!!  I was so excited I could barely contain myself and all I wanted to do was get out of my car and jump for joy.  Not to mention how perfect the timing was of their phone call; when I was crying and stressing over my decision to leave Old Navy!

Back in the job searching world.

So, I'm back in the job search world.  Last week I got a call from my boss that I lost my job.  I took a leave back in June that was for 8 weeks and apparently they wanted me back before the 8 weeks was over.  (Though they never told me that.)  Maybe my mom being sick and having 2 mini strokes, diabetes and then getting her gallbladder removed wasn't a good enough excuse for me needing that 8 weeks to help her out.  I sent them all the medical documentation they needed, but they didn't really care.  I'm the only caregiver of my mom and that's why I needed the full 8 weeks... It was very frustrating.  I'm upset, hurt and very angry that they did this to me, especially during the wrong time of the year.  I have my kids' birthdays coming up as well as Christmas and now I'm back trying to find a job.

Hectic and Crazy Life

Sometimes I feel like I am or have to be super mom, especially lately.  Maybe my life will calm down a little bit, but I can't make myself any promises.  Last week I starte a new job with Comcast and started training last Monday.  I absolutely love the job, it's a customer service job and a new job working from home, but the training clashes with Bluefly.  So, for three days last week I was doing Comcast orientation from 9:00 am - 5:30 pm and working Bluefly from 2:00 pm - 10:00 pm.  I pretty much worked for 13 hours straight!  Absolutely exhausting.

Friday at Last! (Blog & Hops)

Sorry for the tackiness, but I had to use something glitzy to make myself feel better. Ha!  I have had the month week from hell.  I told my friend the other day, if I actually had a month week that went well, I'd be shocked.  Everything seems to go wrong lately! I definitely hope that things start looking up, but I highly doubt that.  At least I am not alone in feeling like life is overwhelming.  Two of my friends feel the same way, as well as a nice client that I met yesterday as well.  Maybe it's just a bad month for everyone.

Flat Tires, Thanksgiving and FOOD!! Monday Mingle for Nov 15th!

How hectic!  Last week was pretty crazy since I worked over 40 hours and went on an interview for a second job.  I went for the interview with H&R Block (Which I worked for, 2 tax seasons past...)  and it seems very promising.  I did explain to them that I have a full time job and can probably only work nights and weekends.  They were very sweet and very accommodating.  I really don't want anything to mess up my full time job because I am doing very well and I am very happy with it.  Of course, the extra income is always something that is welcome around here...  It will be crazy if I do end up getting that job as well, but making money and providing for my kids is the most important. :)

Today is going to be a struggle to actually get work done.  My uncle is having his second cataract surgery and that means my mom is at the hospital with him.  I have to work at 10 and Olivia is home with me while Alayna is in school.  Thank God, after I pick her up from school, my grandmother offered to take the both of them for a little while so I can work...  It won't be that bad until I have to pick her up, but it will be a struggle trying to keep Olivia quiet while I work on the phones.  At least she may fall asleep within the next 20 minutes.  (One can hope, right?)

I want to get another giveaway posted today or tomorrow, so keep a look out for that!  It's gonna be a great one too!  I have so much to get done on my blog and so little time to do it all in!  I also have articles that have deadlines within the next 48 hours... Will I get everything done on time?  Well, I'm hoping I will!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

I worked until 12 am yesterday and I am working until 12 am today. It's exhausting, let me tell you!! I want to end up falling asleep on the counter by 11 pm. lol Though I know it's necessary because of Christmas. It's been very busy. I mean like a non stop flow of customers. :) I never realized, before this, that Sephora is so busy! The only negative thing about yesterday was that we didn't have the mirrored compacts for the gift cards. A lot of people were unhappy about that because that's mainly why they come in... However a lot of them were fine with just coming back in today (hopefully) for the mirrors. :)

That was pretty much my day yesterday and will probably be my entire week. I'm working on Christmas Eve as well, which didn't make my mom happy. She wanted to go to Church, but now we can't. We can probably go Christmas Day, however.

I'm writing this in a rush because I have to get to the mall to finish Christmas Shopping before I work at 3:30...And I need to find a parking spot. Oh the joy of that!! I really need to work more on my blog too... Add more fun stuff like on my old blog.

Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow! (Or not..)

The kids had a good time in the snow, but we didn't really... Especially because of the stupid car that hit me on Saturday. That got me so mad! Progressive is still looking into it. Hopefully they'll be able to fix it for me, but I don't know. At least I didn't have to drive to work yesterday in the slick weather. I just drove to CVS and then came home.

Today is Olivia's 2nd birthday! I'm so excited and happy! I can't believe she's 2 already. It seems like just yesterday she was born. She got a Dora the Explorer bike and a Barbie piano! She's so excited and is jetting around the house on the bike. Those things are HELL to put together, that's for sure! (Though it was fun!) Unfortunately, I have to work today until Midnight, so we have to have her birthday party (with family) on Christmas, and we're going to have to go out to lunch for her birthday on Sunday when I'm off. I'm also going to take her to Toys R Us on Sunday so she can get the Little Mommy Walk and Giggle doll that she wants so badly.

I love working at Sephora, and I especially love the fact that I'm around knowledgeable people that really know about different products. T
here is one product that I have been using that I absolutely LOVE and really want to share. I've been dying my hair since 2004. (And I mean a lot) My hair is very damaged and so I needed something to tame it and have it shine. I tried a lot of things including expensive shine glazes from Sally Beauty Supply, but it didn't work. My boss told me to try the Fekkai Salon Shine Glaze. (Ranges in price from $90-$28 depending on size bottle.) It really does work well! You put it in distributing it evenly throughout your whole hair after you shampoo and condition and towel dry your hair. (Still damp) Leave it in for 3-5 minutes and wash it out. It works amazingly. Doesn't fade your color but actually boosts the color and the shine. After using it 4 times a week for 2 weeks, I can say that it actually works perfectly and has really made my hair shinier and silkier. :) That makes me happy! It's definitely worth trying if you have dull & dry hair.

Selling, Selling, Selling.

It's true that one man's trash is another man's treasure. We cleaned out our entire attic and house, since we are moving in the coming months. We had another garage sale today. I was sure it was going to be the worst garage sale of our entire season, but it wasn't! We made $400! I sold a lot of MY old toys. (From 24 years ago!) I also sold my old iPod, Blackberry, some of my old Coach bags, other purses, clothes, etc... A lot of my plus size clothing got sold, but there is so much more that needs to go! I figure that if I get rid of those clothes, I will NEVER go back.

Alayna was playing outside while we had our garage sale and she picked up a pair of pants that I had right after I had her. I will be honest. It's very embarrassing to me, but I had a size XXL after I had her. Hell, I was so sick during her pregnancy and was always in and out of the hospital. I had pre-eclampsia and that's why I was induced early. However, I gained 70 lbs during the pregnancy with her and afterwards I had so many problems and did not lose as much weight as I wanted to right after. I picked up that pair of pants and put it by myself and OMG...you can fit a second person in there. I'm so happy to have lost 33.3 pounds at this point and it will keep on going until I lose what I want to lose. I know I can do it and I am so happy that I have the willpower this time. I haven't been the size I am now since I was in college. It makes me so happy. :)

We had to come up with a new venue for Alayna's birthday party next weekend. There is no way I am going to be able to come up with the money that I need for her party at the place she wants. :( It makes me so sad because I do everything for her and want to have her party at Roller Jam USA, but it's a lot of money. And we're paying for 15 kids when we only have 6 going. I am not ruling it out, but I just don't think I can do it. If I can't, I may consider another place or may have it in the backyard and just have the kids paint pumpkins. She wants these two presents so badly (the Hannah Montana beach house and a princess castle set) and I want to get them for her. I think she'd prefer that than the huge party. I'm gonna make her a Hannah Montana cake too.

I am now a FULL TIME ARTIST! I got fired from my job today...BY E-MAIL! What was my former boss too freaking chicken to call me? She was being completely unfair to me, she owes me $1200 from back pay she never paid me and the job started to get too stressful anyway. So honestly, I am grateful for this. However, I feel amazing that I got a chance to tell her just how I felt about her and that job before I left. I told her how unfair her business is and how she would succeed better if she treated her employees with more care. I didn't care what I said, I wanted to get it all off my chest. So...now I am a full time artist until I can pick something else up. (Which I will) I am kind of happy that I am going to be able to devote my all to my business. Promoting is going to take a step up which will start on Monday. :)

Splitting my shops.

I had been adding my soaps and body products to ThreeSeventeen, but it was getting cluttered and I didn't like the feeling. I thought maybe more diversity would be better, but I don't think that is the case. Honestly, I think too much diversity is bad and realized I would feel better opening Oh My Cupcake back up. So I am!! To me, this feels a lot better. I can de-clutter ThreeSeventeen and use it for what I need it for; my jewelry. I am going to make my jewelry successful if it kills me! (And it just might!)

Another idea that I had, was to open up a vintage shop. I have one item in my ThreeSeventeen shop right now, however we are cleaning my grandmother's stuff and I realized that the amount of vintage stuff she left me is massive. I don't want it to completely overtake the entire shop. Since we have over 200 things, I may have to just open another shop. It wouldn't be terrible.

I have spent all night working on bath fizzies and soaps. That has been my last 6 hours. I now am feeling inspiration to do jewelry and have a vision of a piece I want to create. I may put away the bath & soap supplies and start on a new piece. I just have this clear vision of what I want to make. That happens very infrequently! Usually, I just go as I go and not have a definite vision. :)

Looking at a garage sale find of an antique shadow box, I am really thinking about making that into a piece of art. I feel I want it to express my childhood and who I was when I was younger. I will probably put it on Etsy when I am finished with it, but it is a project that I want to start sometime soon.

This entry was completely jumbled and not even one complete thought, but that's how my mind is working right now. :)

Pissed off and new items.

I posted some new items today that I am very proud of. Actually, I am proud of all of my items. Some pictures of my items are above in my pretty little banner I made. :) I actually listed some of my new bath and body line today. I listed Pomegranate Message Bar, Passion Fruit Bath Salts and my Large Fall Sample of Vanilla Sugar Bath Salts! Sadly, my labels haven't come in yet for my full size bath salts, so I had to list them without the labels. When they send, I will have the labels for the jars. :) They've actually been in high demand, but now that I finally posted them, I have views but no sales. GRR!! lol In time, In time, I know!! I actually love the scent of all of my items. My bath salts are made with HydroTherapy essential oils that are water soluble and are good for your skin. They don't clog pours and don't irritate your skin. They're great for sensitive skin! (They have been tested on myself and my mother, we both have terribly sensitive skin with high sensitivity to any scrubs, lotions, salts, etc...) Check out my new items. :) As before, every purchase gets a free lip balm.

I'm a little angry in general with my day. Where do I start. Let's start with my daughter going to school. My mom sides with her ALL the time. So my daughter stayed home from school today. My mom ran me into the ground today. She told me that I am a useless SOB, she told me I'm pushing my daughter so hard to go to school because I want the "convenience", she just kept going on and on. None of which is true. My daughter just doesn't want to go to school because she says they learn and they don't play. Well, that's what school is. But my mom just keeps on siding with her and telling her she doesn't have to go to school if she doesn't want to, she bypasses ALL of my rules. We had a huge fight over that this morning. You can't even imagine the fight between myself and my mom.

Secondly, my boss decides that since she doesn't want to pay me, she is moving my pay rate to $1.75 PER CALL. Right now there are almost NO calls available but I still have to sit there for an hour or two and go through to see if there are any calls available. EVERY OTHER REP GETS PAID HOURLY FOR THIS, but she hates me for some reason. I called the Board of Labor today and they said that is illegal. I have to get paid an aggregate for the hours I do not have any calls but still work. So I had to file a Complaint for Wages form (Which totals quite a bit of money that she has cheated me out of) and I have to send that back tomorrow. They said it will take 2 weeks probably because they have to assign a private investigator to my case and they have to look into this. I really don't want to get anyone in trouble, but I am getting cheated and I'm very upset about that.

I am getting so fed up with life at this point. :( We're still poor as hell, I had to change in actual change to get money for lunch and dinner tonight. I invested some money in scratch off lottery tickets and won $6, but reinvested that in more tickets and that's where my luck ended. We just checked our Mega Millions tickets and won $7. At least some things are looking up, but not so much. My paycheck is gonna be crap again this week and I'm just not looking forward to anything.

New York is on High Alert again and so are we. I'm supposed to be going to New York on Sunday, but that's going to be high traffic because of the random traffic checks and I'm not even looking forward to that anymore. Hopefully, maybe my shop will pick up sales and it will cheer me up a bit more. My only dream is for my own creations to get some popularity and actually sell. I'm praying.

OH MY CUPCAKE - VISIT IT!!

OH MY CUPCAKE

I finally got my 2nd shop up.  (Visit it above!)  I am very happy with it.  I love my Oh My Cupcake products so much!  I'm basically going to use it for my bath and body projects.  Possibly some cards as well.  I'd like to keep Three Seventeen just jewelry.  I've read in the Etsy forums that it is easier for customers if different "genres" (so to speak) are in different shops.  I do want my business to succeed, so this is something that I think is proper in order for customers not to be too overwhelmed.

I worked very hard on my soaps the other day.  My favorite of all of my soaps are my denture soaps.  They came out so well!  My favorite scent is the Columbian Coffee soap.  It smells so amazing, I had to make one for myself so I could use it. :)  I love the scent of coffee so much!

A third sale was made the other day!  That made me so excited.  Unfortunately, though, we are pretty much snowed in until tomorrow.  So my two orders will ship tomorrow because of that.  The satellite post offices near me (within walking distance) are closed until tomorrow and only the main post office was open, but we could not get our car down the block.  Snow plows don't think that little dead end private streets need plowing, obviously. *sigh*

Tomorrow morning I have a big job interview at a company in Long Island City, NY.  It's a position for a Junior Sales Representative at a publishing firm.  I'm very excited and a little nervous.  Firstly, I have no idea how to get there and I'm really going to have to leave early enough so I don't get lost.  I also have to find parking.  I'm going to be printing out my resume tonight so that I would be able to leave early in the morning.  I'm nervous because I've never been on a real interview before that wasn't an interview for a retail position.  I am very hopeful and trying to think positive.  I really do think I need this job in order to support my family and be able to securely do the Etsy thing as well.

I posted a few business cards on the pin board at the local grocery store today.  It was completely empty. so I thought I'd draw some attention. ;)  I don't know if it's going to work, tomorrow I'm going to go to the store and see if there are still the 5 there that I posted, but I'm hoping that maybe I could also get some local publicity.

My Google Analytics did say that I had 89 visitors yesterday.  That is a HUGE jump from my usual daily 20-30.  Not sure why I had that many visitors, I don't think I was on the front page or anything, but I just had a lot of visitors.  Strange!! (But good!)
